Behrooz Akbarnia Award

Since 2016, the Behrooz Akbarnia Award for best research paper has been granted to one author at ICEOS. This distinguished prize is based upon nominations by attendees as well as the program committee.

2017 Award Recipients

On Friday November 17, 2017, the Behrooz Akbarnia Award for best paper was awarded to the team from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Dallas, Texas: Daniel Boutin, Lori Karol, Kiley Poppino and Charles Johnston. Their paper was entitled: “Continued deterioration in pulmonary function at minimum 18-year follow-up from early thoracic fusion in non-neuromuscular scoliosis.”

This project was a long-term follow-up to the team's previous study examining the effect of early thoracic fusion on pulmonary outcomes in patients who were a minimum of 5 years postoperative. The current study documented continued pulmonary decline as these patient are entering adulthood.

The results of this project document the need to optimize pulmonary outcomes with current surgical treatment for spine deformity, as well as  improved techniques that encourage greater pulmonary system development during pediatric growth.
